After 25 years of experience in making frames - what are three key tips you would give to a customer to find the perfect frame for them?
CP My preference is always to look at the artwork we are framing and pick a solution that best suits the work, the focus should always be the artwork. We aren’t framing the couch or the floorboards. If we do our job well then you don’t notice what we have done.
You’ve provided framing for the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra - firstly, what can’t you do?! And secondly, is there a piece from those collections/artists that has stuck with you?
CP There have been so many amazing works over the years, I can’t really specify any particular individual pieces. I do like to think that regardless of what monetary value an artwork has we treat all pieces with the same level of care.
What would be a step in the framing process you think the average person might not know about?
CP There are a number of steps and variables that I think people are generally not aware of, things like mounting substrates, glazing options, the number of hand painted coats we apply to a painted finish! Little details like the different types of adhesives we might use depending on how the work is made.
Have you ever had a moment where you got to work with an artist who you have personally admired for years beforehand?
CP That has happened a few times over the years, also in the reverse where I had not been aware of an artist's work and then subsequently became a fan.
"It has been great to work with people over an extended period of time and be able to watch their practices evolve."
What keeps you going every day? Are there daily rituals or, maybe a mindset you have acquired, to stay inspired over the years?
CP Yoga helps.
Are there any trends bubbling under the surface regarding framing for the home that we should be aware of - such as unique locations to hang them, or maybe even of the prints themselves?
CP Trends tend to be cyclical, so what was hot ten years ago isn’t so much right now. I’m a huge fan of aluminium frames though. They have been making a comeback for awhile now.
What drew you to the world of professional framing?
CP Honestly, if you had told my younger self that I’d be doing this well into my 40’s I probably wouldn’t have believed you. Pure fluke.Finish this sentence: When looking for the perfect frame, do not….
CP Over think it.
