Eco-conscious Frames for the Modern Home

A home is where you are surrounded by the people and things that you love… and some of those things can even be hung up on the wall. An important decision when finding the perfect frame is its impact on the world - a simple consideration to have when displaying something intended to bring joy. We’ve made it easy to be eco-conscious at Format Framing by being upfront about our own sustainability journey.

Like many of you, we try our best to keep the planet in the forefront of our mind. We don’t claim to have it all covered, but we’re pretty proud of the steps we have taken.

So how have we embraced eco-friendly methods for our frames?

Made right here

Firstly, transporting materials can not only cost a lot, but can dramatically increase the carbon footprint of the frame. So, we source our frames locally. Handmade by local artisans in Melbourne, our timber is milled, hand sanded and painted right here.

Minimise waste

Wasted materials are also…well, a waste! So to minimise off-cut wastage we have set strict frame dimensions. These sizes were designed to provide multiple options for any request, but they also help us to maximise yield - essentially resulting in less timber being thrown out.

Keep it safe

Every precious piece needs to be protected. We recently shifted to using biodegradable bubble wrap - to keep your artwork, and the environment, safe from harmful plastics.

Printing with by-products

Cotton once had a squeaky clean reputation for its impact on the environment, and now we know that wasn’t quite true. Whilst people still use it, we only use the by-products for our printing. This makes our photographic paper one of the most environmentally friendly as it uses no tree fibres. We’re using up the bits of Cotton the others ignored.

Now, we are well aware we have further to go, and we are always open to feedback from our customers. We know you care about the planet we all live on, and create art on, just as much as us, so we hope you find some comfort in knowing our head is in the right space.
