About Us

Format Framing is a Melbourne-based studio specialising in handmade custom framing and fine art printing. Together with our partner workshop, Fini Frames, our team has been handcrafting frames for over 35 years, with more than a decade dedicated to Format Framing.

Creating from our workshop in Melbourne, we collaborate with artists represented by some of Australiaโ€™s leading commercial galleries alongside emerging local artists, designers and businesses of all sizes. Every piece is made by hand using museum-grade materials and techniques designed to protect and preserve artwork for generations.

Sustainability & Materials

We believe thoughtful craftsmanship begins with responsible materials. Every Format frame is produced from scratch in our Melbourne workshop using sustainably sourced Victorian ash certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), supporting high standards of forest conservation and responsible land management.

Our prints are produced on 300gsm 100% cotton rag paper - an archival paper stock made from recycled textile by-products rather than tree fibres, offering exceptional longevity with a lower environmental impact. We also use museum-grade 3mm plexiglass, a lightweight and shatter-resistant alternative to glass that provides long-term UV protection to minimise fading over time.

Across our packaging and supply chain, we continue to reduce waste wherever possible. Our protective packaging uses biodegradable Polycell EcoPure bubble wrap, and our cartons are made from high-recycled-content board combined with FSC-certified kraft fibres sourced from Victoria.

Intentional Design

Our approach to design is guided by longevity, focusing on delivering an elite product while reducing unnecessary waste. We offer a considered range of frame sizes selected to maximise material yield and minimise offcuts during production.

We at Format are intentionally minimalist. Our frames are designed with timeless proportions, neutral finishes and enduring materials rather than following short-term trends. We believe framing should quietly support the artwork and remain relevant for decades, not seasons.
